THE VILULA TEA GARDEN

...it was a little tea room in my memories...ladies wearing white gloves and pretty hats; soft and mended old linens on the tables; and heirloom roses in crystal vases....lovely.

Update on Rufus

As of this morning, Rufus is swollen all over and his belly is ponderous and hanging down with swelling, looking like a bruised, water-filled balloon. He is eating chicken, moving more and did go outside and used the bathroom to urinate...has not had a bowel movement, yet. He is rubbing his face and licking it. He is still one sick puppy...I'm giving him his antibiotics, Metacam, and rubbing DMSO with corticosteroid on his swollen area and wound every 12 hours as prescribed. More later...if this wasn't a bad bite, I would hate to see one! By the way, thanks Tango...

Please watch your step!!!

These pictures are not of the actual snake but look exactly like the one that bit my Rufus yesterday morning!

Rufus, my male standard doxie was hunting in the ivy next to the back porch like he does every time he goes outside...no matter how many times I scold him for it! Roxy, the little girl on his right (she is 13 years old now) was close by. We just happened to be outside and I saw the whole thing...I did not see the snake at the time, but knew from Rufus' reaction what had happened. My husband and I took a walking stick and a shovel and poked and poked around the area where Rufus was attacked. After a few minutes, lo and behold, a beautiful snake's back appeared. Here was the culprit! This is also the area that I go through to turn on the hose to water my tomatoes every day...
Needless to say, we rushed him to the Vet as fast as we could. By the time I picked him up at 5:00 p.m., he was horribly swollen-he looked like a huge pot-bellied pig around his head and neck!

This is the second time a precious pet of mine has been bitten by a Copperhead snake...our Bailey (a Schnauzer who has since passed away of old age) was bitten twice on her snout and had a terrible time, as well! Thankfully, this was years ago. I was almost bitten a few years ago, myself! I have been reading today about all the dogs that have been bitten by these snakes and according to all the reports, all you have to do is give them an antihistamine and they will be good as new the next day...with little or no pain and minimal swelling! NOT!!! Please be very careful where you step...watch out for your animals and even more for your children!!! They can hide and be invisible...we did not see the snake until it appeared like magic in the ivy! People rarely die from being bitten by these snakes, but the damage is still pretty bad...extreme pain and scarring and sometimes loss of use of the appendage, as in fingers or toes...not to mention high chance of secondary infection. Here's the old nurse talking...sorry!

I would never kill any snake I see, as some people do; I actually like non-poisonous snakes - snakes are valuable in that they do a great service in our ecosystem -but, the way I see it...this snake hurt one of my family so it was destroyed! What do you think?

Great Summer recipes coming up!

Marinated Peppers

Ingredients

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • 1 green bell pepper

  • 1 yellow bell pepper

  • 1 1/2 cloves garlic, sliced

  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh basil

  • 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley

  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (200 degrees C). Place the whole red, green and yellow peppers in the oven directly on the rack. Roast for about 15 minutes, turning if needed, until the skin is well scorched. Immediately place in a bowl covered with plastic wrap or in a paper bag, and allow to cool.

  2. Remove the skins from the peppers by rubbing with your hands, and rinse under cold water. Cut in half, remove stem and seeds, then cut into strips.

  3. Place peppers into a medium serving bowl, and stir in the garlic, vinegar, oil, basil, parsley, salt and pepper.

It's summer here in Georgia and many of us are grilling outside and inviting guests...this recipe is a good appetizer and is even better on slices of Italian bread rubbed with garlic and olive oil and toasted on the grill before adding the peppers!

My Journey-Precept by Precept

I am on a journey to know God and the Bible. I had watched Kay Arthur and Precept Ministries years ago, when I lived in Texas, and loved her teaching style...in reading the Bible through in a year with my Mother, I really got interested in understanding the big picture, not just a verse here and a verse there. I just happened to catch a broadcast of Kay going through the book of Isaiah on t.v. I remembered Precept Ministries and went to the link and started the online Bible study of Isaiah. Instead of watching the daily broadcast (they send the link every day by email), I started in the broadcast archives at the beginning, watching each 30 minute segment...it is a 14 week study. You can download the free study guide, or purchase the whole shebang! I have learned SO much! I am also learning discipline, which I sadly lack...I can't wait to get up each day and dig in, again! Come join me! http://www.precept.org/site/PageServer?pagename=brd_PFL_overview

As I continue studying, I'll post about it here and there...by the way, I am almost ready to get my chickens! I have talked to people and researched the best way to do it in a neighborhood (I have an acre) and I am so excited! I have to have a place for them first, and then I will be on my way! I have a wonderful life!

Tornado at the RexView Drive-In

This is my Mother's account of a tornado that happened on April 18th 1953 in Columbus, Ga. It destroyed the RexView Drive-In in town. “This was the only time I ever saw my husband, Bill, pace back and forth from the front of the house to the back. The wind and rain was going straight across instead of up and down. I sat on the couch holding Debbie and had Paula on the other side of me. After it was over with we could not get through to my sister, Johnnie, and her family to see how they were because the phones were down. The direct hit was in the northern part of the city and most of the damage was in North Highlands, if I remember correctly. The main thing that I thought about after this happened was how we all piled into the car with our ice tea and popcorn (popped at home) and lit out for the Rex View and all got in for a dollar. I remember you had to be a certain age and since Barbara was tall she always sat crunched up in the back seat with Paula & Debbie giggling. We did enjoy it and it is interesting what a great time we all could have with that dollar! Sometimes we had a little extra and you all could go to the concession stand and get a piece of candy for each of you. Incidentally, that Sunday was my and Bill's anniversary.

R. Carlos Nakai - Canyon Reverie

One of my very favorites...R. Carlos Nakai, of Navajo/Ute origin....I am still practicing my Native American Spirit flute... check out the picture and info here about the flutes and Odell Borg, who makes them, if you are interested: http://www.highspirits.com/mcart/index.cgi?code=3&cat=16 if only I could ever aspire to make it sound like this...I feel I am on a journey. I am digging into the Word with Kay Arthur of Precept Ministries http://www.precept.org/site/PageServer?pagename=brd_PFL_overview and
I bought the new Inductive Study Bible NASV and I absolutely love it! Also, spent a few days with my husband and his family in East Point, FL at Sportsman's Lodge and really enjoyed it! The people there were great and when Bob (the owner) heard me playing this music, he said he loved it, too...he has a Spirit place there, and gave me the words "Love, Light, Spirit, Freedom, Faith". He gave me a thousands year old rock, encrusted with shells and said the Spirit told him it was for me...how neat is that? I brought it home and put it in a place of honor by my little goldfish and frog pond! Life is indeed good!
